\u201cAnd as her soul was departing \u2014 for she [Rachel] was dying \u2014 she called his name \u2018<\/span>Ben-Oni<\/span><\/i>\u2019<\/span> [\u2018the son of my sorrow\u2019]. But his father [Jacob] named him \u2018Benjamin\u2019 [\u2018the son of my right hand\u2019]. Thus Rachel died; and she was buried on the way to Efrat, which is Bethlehem.\u201d (Genesis 35:18-19)<\/span><\/p>\n

Ben-Oni<\/span><\/i>, do you hear me? \u00a0It is I, your mother, calling out to you;
\n<\/span>I want to kiss and cradle you, little one; \u2014 but I cannot.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ben-Oni<\/span><\/i>, I am singing a lullaby to you; can you hear it?
\n<\/span>A lullaby of a little goat fed raisins and almonds.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ben-Oni<\/span><\/i>, the raisins will help the little goat grow strong
\n<\/span>And agile enough to leap over all fences.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ben-Oni<\/span><\/i>, the almonds will nourish him and let him hear voices
\n<\/span>That sing lullabies in his dreams.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ben-Oni<\/span><\/i>, you are my little goat; jump this high fence and come to me
\n<\/span>If only for the fleetness of a dream.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ben-Oni<\/span><\/i>, do you hear me singing in your dreams?
\n<\/span>Do you dream of me as I dream of you? <\/span><\/p>\n

Ben-Oni<\/span><\/i>, I stretch out my hands; can you stretch out your fingers
\n<\/span>To grasp my raisins and almonds, my songs, my dreams?<\/span><\/p>\n

Sleep well in your father\u2019s house, little one, the son of my sorrow and my strength;
