It may chart out a life path for the person bearing that name. Rachel, who dies at the birth of her second son, Benjamin, calls him by a name that reflects her grief: &#8220;Ben-oni&#8221; (Genesis 35:18). \u00a0The Hebrew word \u201coni\u201d means mourning, pain; see, for example, the confessional that is recited by a person who brings tithes: &#8220;I have not eaten of it while <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be-oni<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in mourning&#8230;, and I have not deposited any of it with the dead.&#8221; (Deuteronomy 26:14). \u00a0Likewise, one can understand the connotation of Benjamin\u2019s name from the phrase &#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lechem onim, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the food of mourners&#8221; (Hosea 9:4).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jacob fears that such a name, which expresses mourning, will cast a heavy shadow on the future of his son and direct his life on a path that is filled with suffering. Jacob, therefore, wishes to change the name his beloved wife gave to the child, but at the same time he wishes to honor her wishes and preserve her honor. Since the word \u201con\u201d also has a different meaning, that of strength and power, such as in Jacob&#8217;s blessing for Reuben, \u201cMy might and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reishit oni<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> first fruit of my vigor\u201d (Genesis 49:3), he interprets the name given by Rachel in the positive sense, that of power, and calls his son Benjamin (which sounds like Ben-oni), meaning \u201cright-handed,\u201d i.e. strength, as in the text: \u201cYour right hand, O LORD, glorious in power, Your right hand, O LORD, shatters the foe!&#8221; (Exodus 15: 6).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An additional example of an attempt to escape the bitter fate of the name, again a name given to the child by his mother, who had a difficult childbirth, can be found in the tribe of Judah\u2019s family tree: &#8220;Jabetz was more esteemed than his brothers; and his mother named him Jabetz, \u201cBecause,\u201d she said, \u201cI bore him in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be\u2019etzeb<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pain.\u201d&#8221; (1 Chronicles 4:9). Jabetz himself prays to God, asks for the removal of the curse that is rooted in the name, and God answers him in the affirmative: &#8220;Jabetz invoked the God of Israel, saying, \u201cOh, bless me, enlarge my territory, stand by me, and make me not suffer pain from misfortune!\u201d And God granted what he asked\u201d (I Chronicles
