The absence of God from this chapter is puzzling. God, who until now accompanied Jacob closely, while he was still in his mother\u2019s womb, through his struggle with brother Esau about the birthright, the long exile in Haran and the complex relationship with his Laban and his daughters until his fateful encounter with his brother, disappears in an instant, specifically at a time when we are talking about one of the most frightening episodes in Jacob\u2019s life until now. \u00a0It is an episode that begins with the rape of his daughter and ends with the revenge of his sons.<\/span><\/p>\n

Where was God at the time of Dina’s rape? Where was God at the time when her brothers plotted their revenge? Where was God at the time when they had committed their scheme? Where was God after their act of revenge was done?<\/span><\/p>\n

Was God there at the moment of circumcision or the time when Hamor and the innocent people of his city were commanded \u201c<\/span>every male among you is circumcised<\/b>\u201d (Genesis 34:15), before they became easy prey in the hands of Jacob’s sons? This was the same act of circumcision Abraham was commanded by God to perform with exactly the same words – \u201c<\/span>every male among you shall be circumcised<\/b>\u201d (Genesis 17:10), as a sign of the covenant between them. This is the covenant in which God promised Abraham progeny and a land, separateness and election. This is the same act of circumcision that Tzipora performed on her son in order to protect Moses from God who was plotting to kill him (Exodus 4:25).<\/span><\/p>\n

Apparently, circumcision managed to protect us from strangers and even from God, but it did not manage to protect us from
