My sister
\n<\/span>Dinah
\n<\/span>Never talks anymore.
\n<\/span>Not to me.
\n<\/span>Not to anyone.<\/span><\/p>\n

When we were little, we used to play \u2018house\u2019 together.
\n<\/span>Father would carve dolls from wood;
\n<\/span>Dinah would give me the boy doll
\n<\/span>Which we called \u2018Abraham\u2019,
\n<\/span>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0And she would take the girl doll, \u2018Sarah;\u2019
\n<\/span>The dolls would eat sand-pies together
\n<\/span>Sitting on sand-stools, before going to sleep in sand-beds.
\n<\/span>She would place the baby doll, \u2018Isaac,\u2019 in the toy cradle
\n<\/span>Father made for her, and sing lullabies to him,
\n<\/span>Then dress him in a coat of many colors that Aunt Leah sewed for the dolls.
\n<\/span>My brothers would laugh at me and call me a sissy,
\n<\/span>But I didn\u2019t care, as long as Dinah agreed to play with me.<\/span><\/p>\n

Father would teach all of us each morning.
\n<\/span>But after my brothers ran out to wrestle or play ball or hunt birds,
\n<\/span>Dinah and I would stay behind together with Father
\n<\/span>And he would answer all our questions:
\n<\/span>\u201cWhy don\u2019t sheaves of wheat learn how to kneel?
\n<\/span>Why don\u2019t stars know how to bow?
\n<\/span>Why doesn\u2019t the sun turn blue or red?
\n<\/span>Why doesn\u2019t the moon stay full?\u201d
\n<\/span>Father would gently stroke Dinah\u2019s hair, or rest his hand on my shoulder,
\n<\/span>And answer everything.
\n<\/span>Only to Dinah\u2019s question, \u201cWhy do people hurt other people?\u201d
\n<\/span>He had no answer.<\/span><\/p>\n

But now,
\n<\/span>When I go to Dinah every evening, she asks no questions.
\n<\/span>She doesn\u2019t speak.
\n<\/span>Doesn\u2019t even nod.<\/span><\/p>\n

Father thinks it\u2019s hopeless.
\n<\/span>But I don\u2019t give up.
\n<\/span>I talk.
\n<\/span>Maybe she hears something.
\n<\/span>Maybe she listens.<\/span><\/p>\n

This morning I found the old dolls
\n<\/span>And I\u2019ve decided to bring them to Dinah.
\n<\/span>I will be \u2018Abraham\u2019 again, she \u2018Sarah,\u2019
\n<\/span>Maybe this way she\u2019ll talk to me.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Only Father wants me to go up north tomorrow \u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span>And visit my brothers who are tending the flocks.
\n<\/span>But as soon as I get back, I will bring the dolls to Dinah.
\n<\/span>And I will get through to her.<\/span><\/p>\n

I have to.<\/span><\/p>\n

Because she just sits in the corner.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rocking back and forth.<\/span><\/p>\n

Holding her stomach.<\/span><\/p>\n

Six months pregnant.<\/span><\/p>\n

My sister.<\/span><\/p>\n
