\n<\/span>33: 10, 11 – But Jacob said, \u201cNo, I pray you; if you would do me this favor, <\/span>im na matzati chen<\/span><\/em>,<\/span><\/i> …Please accept my present, for God has favored me, <\/span>ki chanani<\/span><\/em>,<\/span><\/i> and I have plenty…\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Do you know a Chen (the Hebrew name, not the Chinese)? How about Chanah or Chanan? All these come from the root \u05d7-\u05e0-\u05e0, <\/span>ch-n-n<\/span><\/em>, \u201cfavor or compassion.\u201d The word <\/span>chen<\/em> <\/span>appears at the very end of chapter 6, where Noach <\/span>matza chen<\/span><\/em>, \u201cfound favor\u201d in the eyes of God. <\/span><\/p>\n

It also appears often with<\/span> chesed<\/span><\/em> (\u201cloving kindness,\u201d or \u201cgrace,\u201d discussed in this space in chapter 24).Indeed, there is a trio of divine gifts: <\/span>chen ve-chesed ve-rachamim<\/span><\/em>, \u201cfavor, loving kindness and mercy\u201d which appear frequently in prayers.<\/span><\/p>\n

The noun <\/span>chen<\/span><\/em> comes from the verb <\/span>chanan<\/span><\/em>, \u201cbless, show favor or compassion.\u201d In a different form, the verb <\/span>lehitchanen<\/span><\/em> essentially means to pray, or ask for <\/span>chen<\/span><\/em>. This can be done in the form of a prayer known as <\/span>techina<\/span><\/em> (not to be confused with the sesame paste of the same name, but different root), which were often said by women in pre-modern Europe (Yiddish plural, <\/span>techines<\/span><\/em>). There is also a prayer said most weekdays at the end of the morning service call <\/span>tachanun<\/span><\/em>. <\/span><\/p>\n

God is described as <\/span>rachum vechanun<\/span><\/em>, \u201cmerciful and compassionate,\u201d in the list of the thirteen divine attributes (Ex. 34:6). A young Israeli seeing the Hebrew word \u05d7\u05e0\u05d5\u05df, though, will almost certainly think sooner of Greg Haffley than of God. Greg Haffley is the wimp in the popular books and movies <\/span>Diary of a Wimpy Kid<\/span><\/em>, translated into Hebrew as <\/span>Yomano shel Ch\u2019nun<\/span><\/em>. <\/span>Ch\u2019nun<\/em> <\/span>is Hebrew slang for \u201cnerd\u201d (from Russian, not related to merciful or compassionate).<\/span><\/p>\n
