The reunion of Jacob and Esau has been interpreted in contrasting ways by commentators and artists alike. The three paintings shown here, <\/span>The Reconciliation of Jacob and Esau<\/em> <\/span>(1625-28) by Peter Paul Rubens, <\/span>Meeting of Jacob and Esau<\/span><\/em> (1844) by Francesco Hayez, and <\/span>Jacob and Esau<\/em> <\/span>(1878) by George Frederick Watts, all portray the same moment in the scene. Yet, they differ in how they illustrate the brothers’ interaction, garb, and respective entourages. These choices reflect different readings of the relationship between the brothers and the motives for their actions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rubens paints Esau in full battle gear, his armed men standing right behind him.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hayez, in contrast, portrays him in everyday garb, coming alone to greet Jacob while his men wait at a distance. <\/span><\/p>\n

Watts’ presentation is somewhere in the middle, depicting Esau with a sheath of arrows but without armor. In his image, neither brother is flanked by family or servants. <\/span><\/p>\n

These different portrayals present different understandings of Esau’s intentions when coming to meet Jacob. Was he approaching with an army of 400 men intent on battle, as Jacob feared, or was he coming in peace with his men serving as an honor guard?<\/span><\/p>\n
