The moment of the meeting with Esau has arrived. \u00a0Three verses of great anxiety in which Jacob organizes his family to face the danger in a way that leaves no doubt about the internal hierarchy in Jacob\u2019s family (verses 1-2), and he, himself, approaches Esau with seven prostrations that convey a message of appeasement and self-effacement.<\/span><\/p>\n

The turning point is in verse 4 \u201cEsau ran to greet him. He embraced him and, falling on his neck, he kissed him; and they wept.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite the warm and emotional welcome, Jacob politely declines Esau\u2019s offer to continue forward together. \u00a0Esau returns to Mount Seir, and Jacob establishes his home in Sukkot and afterwards in Shechem.<\/span><\/p>\n

Points to Ponder:<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Jacob convinces Esau to take the gifts he had sent him. \u00a0In the context of the relationship between Jacob and Esau, the following sentence sounds like a real Freudian slip: \u00a0\u201cPlease accept my present (literally \u201cblessing\u201d alluding to the blessing Jacob received from his father Isaac that was intended for Esau) which has been brought to you\u201d (verse 11). \u00a0Esau, incidentally, takes the present\/blessing.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Construction projects in verses 18-20: a house, Sukkot, a tent, and even an altar.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Second real estate purchase in Canaan. \u00a0After the Cave of Machpelah which was acquired by Abraham for 400 silver pieces (Chapter 23), a field near Shechem is acquired by Jacob for 100 kesitahs (verse 19).<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Jacob begins to use his new name. \u00a0He calls the altar \u201cEl-elohe-yisrael\u201d (verse 20).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","image":{"ID":86314,"id":86314,"title":"Points to
