\u201cWhen he [Esau] raised his eyes and saw the women and children, he asked, \u2018Whose are these?\u2019 \u00a0Then he [Jacob] answered, \u2018They are the children whom God has graced your servant with<\/em>.\u201d (Genesis 33:5)<\/span><\/p>\n

When Jacob married,
\n<\/span>He received a box-camera
\n<\/span>As a wedding gift.<\/span><\/p>\n

How Jacob loved to take pictures:
\n<\/span>Photos of Reuben crawling,
\n<\/span>Simon and Levi making sand-pies,
\n<\/span>Judah eating his birthday cake,
\n<\/span>Issachar and Zebulun walking to school together, hand in hand,
\n<\/span>Dinah with her dolls,
\n<\/span>Gad and Asher climbing a fig-tree,
\n<\/span>Naftali and Dan on the beach.<\/span><\/p>\n

Still, most of the pictures were of Joseph:
\n<\/span>Joseph as an infant, asleep and dreaming on the day of his circumcision,
\n<\/span>Joseph sipping wine from a silver goblet on Saturday night,
\n<\/span>Joseph dressed up on Purim like a king,
\n<\/span>Joseph lighting Hanukah candles,
\n<\/span>Joseph putting on his <\/span>tefillin.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

There were no pictures of Benjamin, though.|
\n<\/span>\u201cThe evil eye,\u201d Jacob used to whisper,
\n<\/span>\u201cSee what happened to my Joseph.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But where is Jacob\u2019s photo album now?<\/span><\/p>\n

In no basement, no attic,
\n<\/span>No trunk, no forgotten paper bag.<\/span><\/p>\n

But if you take a verse,
\n<\/span>Scratch out the black ink of its letters,
\n<\/span>You\u2019ll find under the words<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/p>\n
