It&#8217;s the value of being <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;mevater&#8217;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; of giving up on something. An older child might be asked to be &#8216;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mevater<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216; on a toy that a younger child wants, a parent might ask two bickering children- who will be &#8216;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mevater<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitur <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is more than sharing, and even more than compromising. It is a willing relinquishment of something you have every right to. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chapter 33 is about the power of being &#8216;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mevater<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;. \u00a0We suggested that Jacob&#8217;s experience with the angel has convinced him that true victory will be gained by insisting on win-win. But how is that achieved? Sometimes, what enables a win-win situation is the discovery that each party actually defines success in a subtly different way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Jacob and Esau&#8217;s case, the difference can be summed up by two two-letter words- &#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rav<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8221; and &#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kol<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;. Esau explains his reluctance to accept Jacob&#8217;s tribute by saying that he has &#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rav&#8221;- &#8220;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a lot&#8221;. Jacob insists, because in his eyes, he has \u201ceverything\u201d- &#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kol<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;. Jacob has no need for all the riches he has gained in Laban&#8217;s house, indeed, he has no need for the blessing of dominating his brother. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When he says &#8220;take my blessing which has been brought to you&#8221;, on one level he is referring to the tribute, but it&#8217;s hard not to hear the echoes of that blessing which was meant for Esau, which Jacob took, and is now relinquishing. Esau ultimately acquiesces, because someone who has &#8216;a lot&#8217; will always appreciate having even more. But for Jacob having &#8216;everything&#8217; is not dependent on the quantity of his riches at all. He can give Esau hundreds of animals without losing anything, he can willingly be <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;mevater&#8217;, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because Jacob&#8217;s &#8216;everything&#8217; is defined by whatever God&#8217;s grace has granted him.<\/span><\/p>\n","image":{"ID":85714,"id":85714,"title":"ps78-mercy
