{"id":38711,"date":"2018-08-26T15:18:14","date_gmt":"2018-08-26T12:18:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/?p=38711"},"modified":"2022-03-20T23:32:31","modified_gmt":"2022-03-20T21:32:31","slug":"he-named-that-place-two-camps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/en\/he-named-that-place-two-camps\/","title":{"rendered":"He Named That Place \u201cTwo-Camps\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-content\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[281],"tags":[541],"acf":{"old_id":"38711","type":"no","iframe":"","writer":38713,"related_cahpter":"32","type_929":"2","show_author_image":false,"old_url":"","post_main_content":{"description":"In the times we feel most divided we can also have moments of great revelation","content":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Genesis 32:4 we read that when Jacob saw angels present at his campsite, \u201che said, \u2018This is God\u2019s camp\u2019 and he named the place <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Machanaim<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(two-camps).\u201d Many of the commentators throughout the ages have interpreted the meaning of the grammatical dual form used for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>machaneh<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201ccamp\u201d to be the camp of Jacob and the camp of the angels he saw. However, just a few lines later, in chapter 32, verse 8, we read, \u201cJacob was greatly frightened; in his anxiety, he divided the people with him, and the flocks and herds and camels, into two camps.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After Jacob split everything he had into two camps, he encountered the divine messenger, which revealed the nature of the Jewish soul to Jacob\u2014wrestling with humanity and divinity and becoming Israel. Israel was given his new name in a moment of recognizing the divine in the world, and renames the place <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peniel<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as the Torah relates in 32:31, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So Jacob named the place Peniel, meaning, \u201cI have seen a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>divine being face to face<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, yet my life has been preserved.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From this we can learn that in the times we feel most divided we can also have moments of great revelation. Throughout history, there have been times when hiding their true selves was necessary for Jews to survive. We are fortunate to live in a time that is overall favorable towards Jews. It seems that more and more Jews though are dividing themselves into two groups: the religious and the secular. In our day-to-day lives, we encounter moments where we have to decide whether to divide ourselves into two camps or to wrestle with the messenger. In each case, there is opportunity for revelation and growth if, like Jacob, we are prepared to see
