\n<\/span>And he said to him, \u2018What is your name?\u2019\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Why does Jacob, while wrestling an angel demand a blessing? Why does the angel ask for Jacob\u2019s name? \u00a0According to Rav Shmuel Klitzner, in \u201cWrestling Jacob: Deception, Identity and Freudian Slips in Genesis\u201d, the answer lies in Jacob overcoming psychological trauma.<\/span><\/p>\n

The moment that Jacob is born holding Esau\u2019s ankle, there emerges a struggle over which brother will retain first-born status. This struggle continues when Jacob buys the birthright from Esau, and peaks during the gripping account of Jacob and Rebecca deceiving Isaac into giving Jacob Esau\u2019s blessing. <\/span>At the climactic moment of deception, Isaac asks Jacob, \u201cWho are you my son?\u201d Jacob answers: \u201cI am Esau, your eldest\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Perhaps when Jacob wrestles with the angel, he hauntingly recalls his earlier deception to his father, and then asks for a blessing. The knowing angel responds, \u201cWhat is your name?\u201d In a moment where the past and the recollection of calling himself \u201cEsau\u201d may be tormenting him, Jacob answers with the truth, his name is \u201cJacob\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, \u201cthe sun comes up for him\u201d. The angel changes his name from Jacob, from the root ‘akuv\u00a0<\/em>crooked, to Israel, which contains the Hebrew letters for <\/span>yashar<\/span><\/i>, straight. \u00a0Now Jacob can better confront Esau, after he successfully confronted his most challenging adversary \u2013 himself.<\/span><\/p>\n
