He is on his way with four hundred men\u2014his intentions apparently not benign. This news terrifies Jacob and he begins to prepare for the ominous encounter. Everything he has gained, the family he has formed\u2014all is in peril.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jacob sends multiple herds of animals as gifts to assuage Esau\u2019s anger. He sends his servants with the message: Also, behold, your servant Jacob is behind us, for he said, \u201cI will seek atonement from his face (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">akhapparah panav<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with the offering (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mincha<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) that goes before me\u2014and then I shall see his face (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">er\u2019eh panav<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)\u2014perhaps he will lift up my face! (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yisa panai<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This statement is filled with terminology that is otherwise reserved for the sacrificial service: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>kapparah<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(atonement), <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mincha<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (an offering\/gift) and <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">panim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (face), as well as <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yisa<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (to bear\/lift up). It sounds like Jacob is talking about an encounter with God. This is, in fact, exactly what Jacob says in the next chapter (33:10), \u201cFor I have seen your face\u2014like seeing the face of God and He favored me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps Jacob has realized that it is this encounter with his brother which will ultimately enable him to encounter God. I would suggest this story be read in light of the story of Cain and Abel. Each of them offered a <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mincha<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to God\u2014Cain\u2019s offering was rejected and Abel\u2019s was accepted. Cain\u2019s \u201cface fell\u201d\u2014he was overwhelmed by jealousy of his brother and was not able to reflect on how to improve himself. We know what happened next\u2014murder: the ultimate failure to \u201craise up\u201d the face of one\u2019s brother. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where brotherly strife reigns, the encounter with God is impossible. Cain, who could not face his brother, was henceforth hidden from the face of God. Jacob realized that the way to God was through the face of his brother.<\/span><\/p>\n","image":{"ID":82021,"id":82021,"title":"ps30-hidden
