I would have sent you off with festive music, with timbrel and lyre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The word <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ganav<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> plays a central role in our chapter &#8211; but in two very different meanings. The first simple one is what Rachel does to the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">terafim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the household idols &#8211; which she simply pilfers. Whether she takes them to prevent her father from continuing the grave error of his ways and continuing to worship them, or because she believes in them no less than him, and wants their protections, is not clear. But she does steal them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, while it has been made clear that everything that Jacob has gotten he has achieved fair and square (if a little trickily), he does steal something here. As it says in verses 20 and 27 quoted above (and also in 26), he stole Laban\u2019s <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lev<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, his heart (or even himself, cf v 27). That doesn\u2019t mean he won his affections; it means Jacob deceived Laban, he \u201cstole his mind\u201d or perhaps \u201copinion.\u201d Lying to someone is likened in Hebrew to stealing something valuable of someone &#8211; their clear eyed view of the truth, their grip on the situation, their ability to act. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This word of course gives us the Yiddish <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gonif<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cthief,\u201d and also a cool Israeli slang word that means, well, \u201ccool.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Magniv<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(\u201ccool\u201d \u201cgreat\u201d \u201cawesome\u201d) has been around for a while but it still going strong. Where did it come from?
