Why is Jacob running away? Why could not he tell Laban that he was leaving? Why not allow Laban and his daughters to have a nice good-bye or perhaps negotiate a little about the property and say goodbye as friends?<\/span><\/p>\n

It seems that this is another example of Jacob fleeing just as he has done so many times in the past, avoiding confrontation as much as he can. Apparently, he was afraid that he would no longer be able to put Laban in his place, would no longer be able to set boundaries and assert his rights.<\/span><\/p>\n

Perhaps he does not know how to protect his rights and boundaries because his identity is not clear to him, because he has been living in exile for twenty years, far from his family. For twenty years he has known that he received a blessing from his father that was not meant for him and he did so with his mother’s blessing, and for many more years it has not been clear to him whether he is the oldest brother in the family or the youngest. For more than twenty years, everything has been confused.<\/span><\/p>\n

People who do not know for sure who they are have trouble maintaining boundaries, have difficulty setting boundaries for the ways in which others use them, exploit them, use them.<\/span><\/p>\n

But Laban does not let him get away and forces him to confront him, forcing him to say what is on his mind, forcing him to establish boundaries, a boundary of identity, a boundary of property, a boundary of language, a boundary of stones.<\/span><\/p>\n

And only Rachel conceals the household idols, implying that the question of boundaries, identities, loyalties, and lies is far from being
