Jacob\u2019s time in the home of his uncle, and later father-in-law Laban, begins and ends with dreams, but the difference between them is unsettling.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the way from his parents\u2019 home in Canaan he dreams of the stairway to heaven. A ladder rooted in <\/span>earth<\/span> that reaches the heavens, with God\u2019s angels ascending and descending. The rabbis, in the Midrash, attempting to bolster Jacob\u2019s ability to envision this supernal conduit to God, explain that he had spent the past 14 years studying in the academy of Shem and Ever, meditating on the mysteries and majesty of God day and night.<\/span><\/p>\n

In our chapter, after 20 or so years in the house of Laban, Jacob calls Rachel and Leah to the field for a conversation. Attempting to convince his wives that it is time to head back to Canaan he tells them \u201cduring <\/span>mating<\/span> season I lifted up my eyes and dreamt of male goats mating with streaked specked and mottled ones.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Juxtaposing the dreams together is disappointing. Jacob transforms from a man who lifts his eyes and encounters the divine, to one who lifts his eyes and sees goats mating. Sadly, his dreams are now about the attainment of personal wealth; his incredible ladder of professional success. Therefore God needs to intervene by sending an angel who tells Jacob \u201cnow get up and leave this land, return to the land of your birthplace.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Jacob\u2019s transformation is of course not all that surprising He faces the pernicious influence of his father-in-law, ready to manipulate and trick at every turn. Such wily behavior takes a toll even on the most ideal soul.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the Midrashic reading when Jacob envisions the divine ladder he is the enthused \u201cyeshiva bochur<\/em>\u201d the young man or woman who just spent their gap year studying Torah. Years later that idealism might remain, but it has faded. With many mouths to feed, bodies to clothe, and the mortgage payment due, who can think of the heavens?<\/span><\/p>\n

Jacob\u2019s aging is the normal human development but runs counter to his unique divine mission as the inheritor of the blessings and responsibilities of Abraham, Isaac, Sarah, and Rebecca. The intervention is necessary, it is time to to head home. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","image":{"ID":38611,"id":38611,"title":"ladder of
