Today’s term is close – it is a two-word phrase that only appears once. But as opposed to many of those other unique appearances whose meanings were difficult to determine, this one is as clear as day. The first word lu means “if” or “would that,” similar to it’s extended version – im lu, “if it could be” – known in its shortened form as ilu. The second word – yehi – is simply a form of the verb “to be.” So: “would that it were,” or more colloquially: “let it be.”

That might be all there is to say about this phrase, except that it has had a quite a resurrection, as it were, and a modern career. For when the great Israeli songstress Naomi Shemer (composer of “Jerusalem of Gold” and other megahits of the national consciousness) applied her talents to adapting the Beatles “Let it Be” to Israeli, she came up with the title Lu Yehi, which brilliantly captures the tri-syllabic structure of the original, and combines with the repeated kol shenevakesh, to form the plaintive chorus, “all that we ask – let it be.”

The story is actually more complicated than that. Shemer chose Lu Yehi as the translation of the key phrase, and began writing the song in 1973. The Yom Kippur war broke out, and she quickly adapted her version to the prayer for peace that it became, and at the behest of her husband, she composed an original tune, so that it become more originally Israeli, and not just a Beatle’s cover. It was first performed on Sukkot of that year, a few short days after the war began. The Hebrew song is clearly a prayer, with lu yehi meaning “may it be,” let the request for the safe return of soldiers, etc., be granted.

Paul McCartney later clarified that his original intention was not a prayer, but closer to “let things be,” strive for serenity and accept reality as it is.

https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2018/08/62318d8a2b53e-62318d8a2b53fgen30-milim-lu-yehi.jpg.jpg
https://wp.929.org.il/en/milimilim-the-hebrew-corner-gen-30/62318d8a2b53e-62318d8a2b53fgen30-milim-lu-yehi-jpg/
https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2018/08/62318d8a2b53e-62318d8a2b53fgen30-milim-lu-yehi.jpg-150x150.jpg
https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2018/08/62318d8a2b53e-62318d8a2b53fgen30-milim-lu-yehi.jpg-300x225.jpg
https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2018/08/62318d8a2b53e-62318d8a2b53fgen30-milim-lu-yehi.jpg-768x576.jpg
https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2018/08/62318d8a2b53e-62318d8a2b53fgen30-milim-lu-yehi.jpg.jpg
1536x1536":"https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2018/08/62318d8a2b53e-62318d8a2b53fgen30-milim-lu-yehi.jpg.jpg","1536x1536-width":960,"1536x1536-height":720,"2048x2048":"https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2018/08/62318d8a2b53e-62318d8a2b53fgen30-milim-lu-yehi.jpg.jpg","2048x2048-width":960,"2048x2048-height":720
https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2018/08/62318d8a2b53e-62318d8a2b53fgen30-milim-lu-yehi.jpg.jpg
https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2018/08/62318d8a2b53e-62318d8a2b53fgen30-milim-lu-yehi.jpg-560x420.jpg
MiliMiliM -
