The first is in the area of family (verses 1-25), and the second is in the area of business (verses 26-43).

In the area of family, the cruel competitiveness that began in the previous chapter between the sisters Rachel and Leah, the wives of Jacob, continues. By way of the names given to their sons, one can follow the intensity of emotions.

In the previous chapter (Chapter 29, verses 31-35) Leah bears four sons for Jacob: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah. These sons, Leah had hoped, would bring Jacob closer to her: “The Lord has seen my affliction’; it also means: ‘Now my husband will love me.” (Genesis 29:32).

This chapter opens with Rachel who is barren and jealous who demands that Jacob give her, too, sons “Give me children, or I shall die” (verse 1). Jacob responds angrily, and Rachel initiates a solution. She gives him her maid servant (sound familiar?). And thus, Dan and Naphtali were born. One can see in the interpretation of the name Naphtali testimony to the unbearable difficult battle between the sisters: “A fateful contest I waged with my sister; yes, and I have prevailed” (verse 8). Leah in response gives her maid servant Zilpah to Jacob, and thus Gad and Asher are born. It is a tie (that is, between the two maid servants).

What is the next round? Reuben, Leah’s son, finds in the field some mandrakes, which are thought to help with fertility problems. Leah is prepared to give them to her barren sister Rachel in exchange…for one night with Jacob. And thus from Leah is born Issachar and after him comes Zebulun, and then (surprise: a girl!) Dina..

In verse 23, God finally remembers Rachel and opens her womb, and thus is born Rachel’s first child, Jacobs eleventh, Joseph.

In the area of business (the family business) Jacob wants to leave Haran. Until now he worked for Laban. Now, Jacob requests payment, and with it, he will go out on a new journey. Jacob requests from Laban that he be allowed to raise his own flock and take the sheep “every dark-colored sheep and every spotted and speckled goat. Such shall be my wages” (verse 32). Given that this type of goat is extremely rare, Laban quickly accepts the deal.

Laban understands a bit about genetics and does not want Jacob’s flock to grow. Therefore, he removes all the spotted, speckled, and brown he-goats from Jacob’s herd. However, Jacob apparently understands more about genetics and knows that there are recessive traits. He manages to create the necessary breeding and greatly increase his flock. At the same time, he also does some act with carved sticks, probably a diversionary maneuver. (You can read about it in verses 37-44).

Points to Ponder:

From one, there are four. Jacob, who wanted only one wife in the previous chapter, ends this chapter with four. Without much choice.

Jacob’’s response to Rachel’s pain is difficult especially because he is the one who is in love (verses 1-2).

When Rachel’s first son Joseph is born, Jacob decides that this is it. The chapter dealing with Haran in his life is coming to an end. Why? It is worth thinking about.

Jacob is the first leader in history to establish a household. In fact, he expressed it in his words to Laban: “And now, when shall I make provision for my own household” (verse 30).

How does Jacob build his flock? Probably with an in-depth understanding of Mendel’s genetics laws and sensitivity to the exact timing when animals go into heat. But he keeps the secrets of science to himself. Ostensibly he works with the methods used by the shepherds, and there are sticks carved with all kinds of markings in the sheep’s troughs.

Points to
