There is jealousy and sibling rivalry. Anger and infertility. Struggle and vindication. Despair and empathy. Passion and promise. The narrative is compressed, as a fetus is in the womb. Without much detail, the dense narration and the quick pace of the birth narrative and naming of Jacob\u2019s children overwhelms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I felt a similar feeling of being emotionally overwhelmed by a depiction of birth narratives on a recent visit to the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, for the photography exhibit \u201cBeing.\u201d The exhibit, which asks how photography can capture what it means to be human, included a debut installation by artist Carmen Winant, who created an intimate and evocative portrait of birth in a collage titled, \u201cMy Birth.\u201d On two walls in a narrow 20-foot-long-gallery, Winant affixed more than 2,000 images of women moving through the full, uncensored continuum of birth. The photos, plastered on top of one another, overwhelm, as one walks through the narrow channel. The depictions are startling, raw, intimate and tender.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Giving birth is one of the most intimate and personal moments in an individual&#8217;s life; we feel that no one else experiences it in the same way that we do. Or that no one could possibly have the same experience at all. \u00a0And yet, the universality of the experience, the shared emotions, the pain, pleasure, joy and sometimes sorrow, are on display for
