\u201cAfterwards she [Leah] gave birth to a daughter; and she named her Dinah.\u201d (Genesis 30:21)
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

I love all my children.
\n<\/span>But my youngest, my only daughter, whom I treasure,’
\n<\/span>Dinah, my quiet little girl,
\n<\/span>Is starlight;
\n<\/span>Never fighting or arguing with her brothers,
\n<\/span>Always sharing all she has.<\/span>
\n<\/span>And though she is only five, she can read.<\/span><\/p>\n

She is starlight for my husband too.
\n<\/span>When he comes home in the evening,
\n<\/span>All the boys run out to him
\n<\/span>And he embraces each son, kisses each one;
\n<\/span>But Dinah \u2014
\n<\/span>Dinah he picks up high and whirls her around
\n<\/span>Until she laughs; and he laughs too,\\
\n<\/span>Hugging her in his arms.
\n<\/span>\u201cMy sparkle, my glitter,\u201d he whispers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Last Friday, my husband told Dinah
\n<\/span>She too could light Sabbath candles \u2014
\n<\/span>The one moment, in a household full of boys,
\n<\/span>When women reign:
\n<\/span>Rachel first, then I, then Bilhah and Zilpah
\n<\/span>Close our eyes and bless the candles
\n<\/span>As all the boys stand quietly and watch.<\/span><\/p>\n

When my Dinah took the match her father gave her,
\n<\/span>Her hand trembled, and nearly dropped it.
\n<\/span>She blessed the candle, then turned
\n<\/span>And kissed me.<\/span><\/p>\n

But every night since then I dream
\n<\/span>That all the other candles burn well, burn tall,
\n<\/span>And ascend to the sky as stars
\n<\/span>Proliferating into constellations,
\n<\/span>Propagating galaxies.
\n<\/span>But Dinah\u2019s candle flickers and goes out,
\n<\/span>A meteor that flares up for a moment in the night sky
\n<\/span>And is seen no more.
\n<\/span>No matter how many times she tries to light it,
\n<\/span>Her candle will not burn.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why won\u2019t her candle find light?
\n<\/span>Or warmth?
\n<\/span>Or flame?<\/span><\/p>\n

Where is my Dinah\u2019s
