With the names of the tribes in our chapter, as at the end of the previous chapter, there arises from the verses an almost naive honesty about the meaning of procreation.<\/span><\/p>\n

A great secret that is forbidden to state is that having children does not necessarily stem from kindness.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the Bible, in a world of ideas, unlike the theory of evolution, with its \u200b\u200begoism and survival, \u00a0we would have expected that the birth of children be expressed as the essence of altruism. A person will have children from his concern\u2026 for their interest.<\/span><\/p>\n

It seems that the matriarchs “use” the children or their presence out of concern for…themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the previous chapter, Leah, the unloved wife, hopes that with the appearance of her children, Jacob will eventually feel close to her. “Now my husband will love me” (29:32), “This is because the Lord heard that I was unloved” (verse 33), “This time my husband will become attached to me” (verse 34) – with Reuben, Simeon, Levi, respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rachel also names her sons and the sons of Bilha names that can indicate her distress and what she interprets as a form of success by virtue of their birth.<\/span><\/p>\n

“A fateful contest I waged with my sister; yes, and I have prevailed.” (Genesis 30: 8), “God has taken away my disgrace\u201d (verse 23)… \u201cMay the Lord add another son for me\u201d (verse 24) – these with Naphtali and Joseph, respectively. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Bible, as usual, is piercing and does not hide the blemishes of its heroes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Try to tell parents, certainly those who believe in the sanctity of the commandment to “be fruitful and multiply” (Genesis 1:28), that their need for children is an egoistic one. The reaction will usually be that this is outrageous.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the other hand, the Torah exposes the deepest and most primal human needs.<\/span><\/p>\n

In having children, the Torah states, there is also and perhaps mainly a psychological\/social \/ class correction of the parents themselves–which does not diminish the importance of procreation.<\/span><\/p>\n

“And God blessed them” (Genesis 1:28). God never demanded of man some \u201cnoumenon\u201d in the Kantian sense, i.e. an object or event that exists independently of human sense and\/or perception.
