In the story of Jacob and his two wives, the nature of the relationship between the two sisters, especially the competition between them for Jacob’s love and for his seed, is striking.<\/span><\/p>\n

They are competitive, crazily jealous, and turn nights in bed with him into a commodity. What\u2019s not mentioned is even a word about love between them.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rachel manipulates her husband, “Give me children, or I shall die” (Genesis 30:1).<\/span><\/p>\n

At this moment she is a drama queen. It is clear she does not really intend to commit suicide. And it\u2019s annoying, and so Jacob gets upset. But per her instructions, he impregnates her maid servant in her place.<\/span><\/p>\n

Later in the chapter, Leah answers her sister with a venomous sentence: “Was it not enough for you to take away my husband, that you would also take my son\u2019s mandrakes?” (Genesis 30:15).<\/span><\/p>\n

Out of this struggle between sisters emerges the tribes of Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n

I love the parts in which the text brings about good things for the two sisters, each at her own moment.<\/span><\/p>\n

Leah, who was unloved because Jacob loved Rachel, gives birth to his firstborn son Reuben, and after him Simeon, Levi, and Judah.<\/span><\/p>\n

From the moment she bore him sons, she ties him to her in bonds that cannot be broken.<\/span><\/p>\n

And Rachel, after all her troubles in the infertile years, gives birth to Joseph, who will become the significant brother.<\/span><\/p>\n
