At the circumcision of her fourth son,
\n<\/span>Leah couldn\u2019t stop crying;
\n<\/span>Jacob alone had to welcome the many guests
\n<\/span>Who crowded into the tent.<\/span><\/p>\n

Isaiah was the <\/span>sandak<\/span><\/em>
\n<\/span><\/i>And Maimonides the <\/span>mohel<\/span><\/em>,
\n<\/span>Whose hands remained steady
\n<\/span>Even as Leah cried.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rabbi Akiva sat at the main table with Rashi,
\n<\/span>Learning together a difficult passage in the Talmud,
\n<\/span>While Freud and Einstein argued in German,
\n<\/span>With Heine eavesdropping.<\/span><\/p>\n

As King David played his harp, eyes closed,
\n<\/span>Felix Mendelssohn listened and tapped his fingers,
\n<\/span>While Mahler and Schonberg scribbled quickly,
\n<\/span>Trying to write down the notes.<\/span><\/p>\n

After Jacob delivered a short speech
\n<\/span>About Jewish fate and links in the chain of the generations,
\n<\/span>The grandfather, Isaac,
\n<\/span>Embraced his son warmly.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yet Leah couldn\u2019t stop crying,
\n<\/span>Even though Rabbi Nachman told a story about joy without end,
\n<\/span>Even though the Baal-Shem-Tov had everyone dancing,
\n<\/span>Even though the Messiah\u2019s wife stroked Leah\u2019s hands and kissed her.<\/span><\/p>\n

And in a corner of the tent, Paul Celan
\n<\/span>Looked on as Nelly Sachs, sighing, took out her pen
\n<\/span>And wrote about butterflies
\n<\/span>And chimneys.<\/span><\/p>\n

Leah cried.<\/span><\/p>\n
