Moreover, I ate of it before you came, and I blessed him; now he must remain blessed!\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this chapter we read of Isaac\u2019s (alleged) violent emotional response to (apparently) being duped into thinking that he was blessing Esau. (As some of the essays today claim, a good case could be made that Isaac was in on the ruse, and did it to credibly give the blessing to Jacob, but that\u2019s another story&#8230;). The word translated here as \u201cviolent trembling\u201d is <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">charadah<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This term has two manifestations in modern Hebrew. One is as the specific translation of the psychological term <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiety<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A person can have <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">charadot<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cfears\u201d or \u201canxieties,\u201d or have a <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hetkef charadah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an \u201canxiety attack,\u201d or simply be <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cherdati<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201canxious.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, this word may be more familiar to non-speakers of Hebrew as the term used to refer to the ultra-Orthodox, i.e., the Charedim (often written Haredim). The context here would make it an epithet similar to the Quakers in English, quaking or trembling with the fear of God. Most connect it specifically to the use of the word in later prophets, such as the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isaiah 66:5 &#8211; \u201cHear the word of the LORD, You who are <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">charedim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, concerned about His word!\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And &#8211; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ezra 10:3 &#8211; \u201cNow then, let us make a covenant with our God\u2026in accordance with the bidding of the Lord and of all who are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>charedim,<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">concerned over the commandment of our God.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given the meaning of the term in our chapter &#8211; \u201cviolent trembling\u201d &#8211; the translation used in those verses &#8211; \u201cconcerned\u201d &#8211; is perhaps milder than it should be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using this term in contemporary Hebrew of course generates various forms. For instance \u201cto become Charedi &#8211; or more Charedi\u201d is <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lehitchared<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, using a form of the verb that indicates undergoing a process. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another use is a combination form that requires a short explanation. There used to be a clear division between the national religious, very Zionist, knitted <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kipot <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and modern dress, and the Charedim, with their non-Zionist stance (including refusing to serve in the army), and their particular dress (long black coats, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">payot &#8211;\u00a0<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sidelocks, and large black kipot).
