This corresponds exactly to Abraham’s servant who went to bring back from there a wife for Isaac.)

At this opportunity, Jacob gets from Isaac “the blessing of Abraham” which includes the blessing of progeny (that they will become a great nation) and the blessing of the land (that they will inherit Canaan)–verses 4 and 5.

On the way, in Beit El, Jacob dreams “Jacob’s famous dream” in which a stairway/ladder is standing on the ground and its head reaches the heavens. Angels go up and down and God Himself in His glory reveals Himself to Jacob. In this revelation, God first of all validates the blessing of Isaac from the previous verses (both the progeny and the land), and afterwards, not any less important, God promises to protect Jacob on his journey and to make sure he returns home (i.e. to Canaan) safely.

When Jacob awakens from his sleep, he understands that there is no better place than this to be: “This is none other than the abode of God, and that is the gateway to heaven” (verse 17). In the meantime, he sets up a stone upon which he sleeps and vows that if the Divine promise for protection is fulfilled, immediately upon his return, he will set up in Beit El an altar and will give God one tenth of all his possessions.

Points to Ponder:

Esau continues to try to appease his father and give him some joy. He marries one of Ishmael’s daughters. However, there is a good chance that the ladder was, in fact, a stairway, not a ladder. This is based on the Akkadian word “simmiltu” (which is connected to the Hebrew “sulam”) which is also similar to the Hebrew word “solelah” which is an embankment or rampant (which has an ascending slope).

In this chapter there are a lot of innovations in the area of established religion. Abraham, as you recall, erected altars throughout many chapters, and Jacob did the same in one chapter: He erected an altar, anointed it with oil, vowed a vow, takes a tithe, and speaks about building a House of God (verses 17-22)!

There will eventually be a temple in Beit El (not just an altar), but that is another story, even in another book of the Bible.
