On Jacob\u2019s ladder,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Bands of melodic angels<\/span>
\n<\/span>Quaver on each rung<\/span><\/p>\n

As notes of music<\/span>
\n<\/span>That first ascend, then descend<\/span>
\n<\/span>On a score\u2019s black staves<\/span><\/p>\n

To be played slowly<\/span>
\n<\/span>In symphony orchestras<\/span>
\n<\/span>On flutes and oboes,<\/span><\/p>\n

On drums and cymbals,<\/span>
\n<\/span>On violins and cellos,<\/span>
\n<\/span>On horns and trombones.<\/span><\/p>\n

On Jacob\u2019s ladder,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Choruses of angels chant<\/span>
\n<\/span>Psalms of thanksgiving;<\/span><\/p>\n

Their bass voices fall,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Then rise as countertenor<\/span>
\n<\/span>Till soprano reigns.<\/span><\/p>\n

Under his ladder,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Jacob hears angels ascend<\/span>
\n<\/span>And descend in him.<\/span><\/p>\n
