On the one hand, as the newly confirmed heir to the divine promise to Abraham, he knows that his destiny lies in the land of Israel. On the other hand, however, his relationship with his brother Esau has deteriorated to the point of near-fratricide. The resolution: preservation of life (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">piku\u2019ah nefesh<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) transcends all and we witness yet another ruse in a portion replete with subterfuge: On the premise that Jacob needs a <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shiddukh<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a \u201cmatch,\u201d Isaac and Rebecca dispatch him to Haran, their ancestral home, to secure a bride from the family of his Uncle Laban.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On his way, he spends the night in an unspecified place and dreams of angels going up and down on a <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sulam<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014usually translated as a ladder but equally likely to have been a ramp\u2014with God poised above it, promising him a safe journey and successful return home. On the morrow, he remarks on the wonder of the dream and names the site <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beit-el<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Home to God.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rashi and his grandson Rashbam differed markedly in their assessments of this incident. To the former, it was a typical divinely enabled vision complete with a miraculous journey, unnatural sunset, and stones fusing together. To the latter, the only extraordinary element was Jacob\u2019s recognition that behind the mundaneness of nature and human experience lies the providential hand of
