I long for stones to put under my head,<\/span><\/p>\n

to dream of a ladder that reaches<\/span><\/p>\n

into the sky, where angels go up and down,<\/span><\/p>\n

to know that God was in this place,<\/span><\/p>\n

to take stones, and set them as a pillar, pour oil<\/span><\/p>\n

on the top, wait to give name to<\/span><\/p>\n

that place, wait for someone to call out<\/span><\/p>\n

what they have found so I will know what I have lost.<\/span><\/p>\n

I long, too, for fluidity, for rain to release me<\/span><\/p>\n

from my vows, to give thanks for every drop,<\/span><\/p>\n

to fill my mouth with song as the sea is with water,<\/span><\/p>\n

and my tongue with praise as the roaring waves,<\/span><\/p>\n

to be incandescent, iridescent, volatile.<\/span><\/p>\n

Janet<\/span><\/i>: \u201cI have always been taken with the story of Jacob dreaming and wrestling. \u00a0In this poem, I was exploring how I wanted to feel God more in my life, to have an experience like Jacob did. Reading in the Talmud about lost and found objects was how I was feeling about my religious life, and I knew that had to be in the poem. \u00a0One of my favorite prayers is <\/span>ilu finu<\/span><\/em>, right after <\/span>Nishmat<\/span><\/em> in the morning service. \u00a0Its imagery and tone are so different than the prayers that come before and after, and I think that\u2019s because it\u2019s poetry. \u00a0I\u2019m carried away by this prayer, and it helped me express the release I wanted to experience God more in my life.”<\/span><\/p>\n
