Isaac prepares to give the blessing to Esau before his death. \u00a0Rebecca hears the plan and tries to frustrate it and send Jacob to receive the blessing instead of Esau.<\/span><\/p>\n

How? She does it with the help of his senses (Isaac\u2019s). Almost.<\/span><\/p>\n

Isaac is old \u201chis eyes were too dim to see\u201d (verse 1-that is, his sense of sight was extremely weak). Isaac sends Esau to hunt some game and prepare from it a meal, after which Esau would merit a blessing. \u00a0Rebecca, who is scheming to send Jacob instead of Esau, prepares tasty food from the flock that is in the courtyard. Due to Isaac\u2019s weak eyesight, he cannot tell which of his sons is bringing him a meal.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jacob raises the suspicion from the sense of touch that may confound the plan \u201cBut my brother Esau is a hairy man and I am smooth-skinned. \u00a0If my father touches me, I shall appear to him as a trickster…\u201d (verses 11-12). For this too, Rebecca finds a solution. She covers up Jacob in the clothes of Esau on his hands and on his hairless neck and puts on him skins of young goats.<\/span><\/p>\n

When Jacob gets to where Isaac is, the sense of hearing comes into play and clashes with the sense of touch \u201cHe (Isaac) wondered. \u2018The voice is the voice of Jacob, yet the hands are the hands of Esau.\u2019\u201d (verse 22).<\/span><\/p>\n

After Isaac tries to clarify through speech the identity of the son and eats the food, he engages the sense of smell. \u00a0And with the smell comes the blessing \u201cAnd he smelled his clothes (Esau\u2019s clothes that Jacob was wearing) and he blessed him, saying, \u2018Ah, the smell of my son is like the smell of the fields that the LORD has blessed (verse 27).<\/span><\/p>\n

The trick worked. Jacob received the blessing, and when Esau shows up to Isaac, all that is left for him is to cry out, \u201che burst into wild and most bitter sobbing\u201d (verse 34).<\/span><\/p>\n

The apparently inevitable consequence of stealing a blessing is that Esau plans to kill Jacob (verse 41). \u00a0Once again, Rebecca has a plan: Jacob will run away to her brother\u2019s house in Haran until Esau\u2019s anger passes. \u00a0Note that Rebecca assumes that Esau will calm down quickly (relatively), and Jacob will be able to return quickly (verses 44-45).<\/span><\/p>\n

Points to Ponder:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. \u00a0<\/span> Pay attention to Rebecca\u2019s activeness. She is self-confident and determined to execute the plan (verses 5-17). \u00a0Jacob, on the other hand, hesitates and is rather passive.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. \u00a0<\/span> There is a kiss before the blessing to Jacob (who is disguised as Esau)! Verses 26-27.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. \u00a0<\/span> What is the content of the blessing? It is worth checking verses 28-30. \u00a0Is this \u201cthe blessing of Abraham\u201d–i.e. the blessing of the son who will continue the patriarchal family?<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. \u00a0<\/span> Isaac\u2019s violent trembling when he discovers the big trick is nearly as great as Esau\u2019s cry of pain. \u201cIsaac was seized with very violent trembling…he burst into wild and most bitter sobbing\u201d (verses 33, 34).<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. \u00a0<\/span> Jacob is Jacob, not something new, as they say. Or as Esau says it in verse 36: \u00a0\u201cWas he, then, named Jacob that he might supplant me these two times? First he took away my birthright and now he has taken away my blessing!\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","image":{"ID":86314,"id":86314,"title":"Points to
