Isaac saw Esau as the firstborn son, the heir and leader, who could protect a people and an inheritance. He did not see Jacob and Esau as separate nations and therefore saw no reason to deny Esau his birthright, even after marrying foreign women. However, Isaac did not genuinely offer a blessing, neither to Esau nor to Jacob, but a blessed synthesis, combining the hands of Esau and the voice of Jacob, a hidden dream of Isaac\u2019s that suddenly seemed to be realized (mistakenly) – \u201cEsau\u201d who took on Jacob’s voice. \u00a0This certainly is worthy of a blessing.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, it was all a hoax. There was really no one there whose voice was the voice of Jacob and hands were the hands of Esau (Genesis 27:22).<\/span><\/p>\n

How will the blessing be given when there is no one to whom it applies?<\/span><\/p>\n

Jacob will pay for the deception (which he did not want) and will find himself twenty years in the field with the skin of the young goats, until those skins become part of him. With toil and agony, and in the face of Laban’s repeated deceptions, Jacob will acquire the blessing of his father.<\/span><\/p>\n

But a \u201cskillful hunter\u201d (Genesis 25:27) in this story is a nickname for a warrior. Isaac loved Esau because he knew how to hold the sword. And Jacob? He never fought and never held a sword. He was a quiet man who dwelled in tents, who whenever he was in danger, he rain away.<\/span><\/p>\n

Only when Jacob wrestles with the wonderous man at the break of dawn (Genesis 32:25) and proves that he knows how to fight when there is no choice does he receive the name \u201cIsrael,\u201d and then Isaac’s blessing applies. For there will arise a people with “the voice of Jacob and the hands of Esau” and he will be worthy of
