\u201cBless me too father.\u201d But he answered, \u201cyour brother came in with guile and stole your blessing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Like Isaac we often believe that what is done, cannot be undone\u2026the pain and the grief that emerges from a wrong decision is raw and bitter and final. Isaac is at a loss for words as he tries to understand what\u2019s taken place and the consequences of his actions. \u00a0We often find ourselves walking in the shadow of Isaac, trembling as the sea of darkness and despair spans wider than we realized. The self-directed anger and unrest that knows no bounds. <\/span><\/p>\n

We are also like Esau, devastated when the future we imagined for ourselves has been changed. \u201c<\/span>Va-yitz\u2019ak tz\u2019akah g\u2019dolah u\u2019mara<\/span><\/em>\u201d – \u201che burst into wild and bitter sobbing\u201d \u2013 Esau is in anguish and begs his father for a different outcome, for one more blessing, but Isaac struggles to find a way that would provide enough for both children. Isaac could not imagine giving more \u2013 for him it was a zero-sum game \u2013 as he had been taught from his father Abraham. One child inherits. One child does not. Isaac not Ishmael. Jacob not Esau.<\/span><\/p>\n

But that is not the end of the story. Isaac digs deep and offers some words to his hysterical son. They are not the poetic divinely inspired words granted to Jacob. They place Esau as subservient to his brother, but they are a start. Decisions aren\u2019t final, there is another path, there is room for others, if we dig deep and make room. It would take another generation, but twelve brothers would share the land, the blessings, the heritage of the patriarchs and matriarchs. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Isaac manages to change course ever so slightly, there is a path that moves us forward, and after an error, we must find our way onto
