{"id":38099,"date":"2018-08-19T00:07:03","date_gmt":"2018-08-18T21:07:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/?p=38099"},"modified":"2022-03-11T14:08:35","modified_gmt":"2022-03-11T12:08:35","slug":"chapter-summary-genesis-26","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/en\/chapter-summary-genesis-26\/","title":{"rendered":"Chapter Summary &#8211; Genesis 26"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-content\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[281],"tags":[],"acf":{"old_id":"38099","type":"no","iframe":"","writer":false,"related_cahpter":"26","type_929":"2","show_author_image":false,"old_url":"","post_main_content":{"description":"Chapter 26 Summary: \u00a0The Story of Isaac in the Land of Israel","content":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this chapter, there are three stories connected to Isaac\u2019s relations with his neighbors in the land in which he lives and two revelations of God to Isaac, one establishes the promise of the Land (verses 2-5) and the second, the promise of progeny (verse 24).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three stories:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verses 8-11: \u00a0Isaac and Rebecca at Gerar<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make way for the third (and final time) the wife-sister motif appears (the first time is with Abram and Sarai in Egypt, Chapter 12; the second time is Abraham and Sarah in Gerar, Chapter 20). \u00a0This time, the players are Abimelech the King of Gerar and Isaac and Rebecca. This time matters are slightly softened and slightly more fair than the previous ones. Isaac says that Rebecca is his sister, but she is not taken captive. \u00a0Only after a few days, when the local people discover that they are a married couple, the drama begins, which lacks any disaster, only anxiety about the guilt that might have occurred due to Isaac\u2019s lie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verses 12-22: \u00a0Isaac and the Wells<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isaac gets himself established. \u00a0He sows fields and opens wells. Why does he open them? Evidently, his father Abraham dug wells, but they were blocked by the Philistines who did not like the idea that someone else was sharing the pasture and the groundwater in the area. The new wells, too, that Isaac\u2019s servants dig are not accepted by the Philistines. \u00a0It is sufficient to hear the names of the wells to imagine what was taking place \u201cHe named that well Esek, because they contended with him. And when they dug another well, they disputed over that one also; so he named it Sitnah.\u201d (verses 20-21).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verses 26-31: The Pact with Abimelech<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the wars and conflicts comes reconciliation&#8211;not from any overflowing mutual love but more from the ancient political understanding, \u201cif you can\u2019t beat \u2018em, join \u2018em.\u201d Or, in the words of the Bible \u201cWe now see plainly that the Lord has been with you, and we thought: Let there be a sworn treaty between our two parties, between you and us. Let us make a pact with you\u201c (verse 28).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Points to Ponder:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Different details in the stories of Isaac repeat what had happened to his father Abraham. \u00a0However, in verse 2 we also see a difference. There is a famine, but Isaac due to the strength of the command does not leave for Egypt, as Abraham had done, but rather remains in the area of the Philistines, Gerar.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look in the chapter for the phrases that became names many years afterwards (Verse 10: Achad Ha\u2019am, a Hebrew essayist, and one of the foremost pre-state Zionist thinkers who is known as the founder of cultural Zionism.; Verse 12: Meah Shearim, one of the oldest Jewish neighborhoods in Jerusalem and currently populated by Ultra-Orthodox Jews).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food and reconciliation go well together. \u00a0Verses 30-31: \u201cThen he made for them a feast, and they ate and drank\u2026and hey departed from him in peace.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mazel tov! Congratulations? At the end of our chapter, Esau gets married, even twice. \u00a0However, Isaac and Rebecca are not too happy (verses 34-35).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","image":{"ID":86314,"id":86314,"title":"Points to
