Two paintings from the circle of the 17<\/span>th<\/span>-century Dutch painter Mattias Stom, one by Stom himself (a 17th century Dutch painter heavily influenced by the Italian artist Amerighi da Caravaggio), and another by an unknown artist, depict the sale of the birthright by Esau to Jacob. In both, the brothers are around a table, with one seated and the other standing, in a darkened room. But the two differ in several important details.<\/span><\/p>\n

Stom paints Esau with a dead rabbit in his hand \u2013 the results of his hunt, presumably \u2013 while the second painting has him empty-handed. If he is literally dying of hunger, Jacob seems to be taking advantage of a terrible situation. Stom adds a third character to the scene, presumably Rebecca. Is this his attempt at explaining Rebecca\u2019s later actions in deceiving Isaac? The characters are different ages in the paintings, as well, and the question of how similar they looked is also tackled in different ways.<\/span><\/p>\n
