{"id":37915,"date":"2018-08-15T13:57:08","date_gmt":"2018-08-15T10:57:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/?p=37915"},"modified":"2022-03-09T22:28:58","modified_gmt":"2022-03-09T20:28:58","slug":"chapter-summary-genesis-25","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/en\/chapter-summary-genesis-25\/","title":{"rendered":"Chapter Summary &#8211; Genesis 25"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-content\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[281],"tags":[],"acf":{"old_id":"37915","type":"no","iframe":"","writer":false,"related_cahpter":"25","type_929":"2","show_author_image":false,"old_url":"","post_main_content":{"description":"Chapter 25, Summary:  The Competition over the Birthright\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n","content":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a chapter of births and lineages (and more). \u00a0The chapter has two parts and a third that is surprising. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verses 1-11: \u00a0The children of Abraham. \u00a0It seems that not only Isaac and Ishmael, whom we met in the previous chapters, are Abraham\u2019s children, but six other children from his concubine Ketura, from whom various nations will emerge, are detailed in these verses. \u00a0As befits the children of concubines, they do not inherit but they do receive gifts (verse 6) and continue on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verses 12-18: \u00a0The lineage of Ishmael. \u00a0Twelve sons. Twelve heads of nations. \u00a0(If the number sounds familiar to you, it is apparently intentional.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verses 19-34:The lineage of Isaac. \u00a0Instead of getting a list (as there was with Ishmael\u2019s lineage), we are told a complicated story about Rebecca who is barren, a strange pregnancy that arouses concerns, and a prophecy about twins that will become competing nations. \u00a0Afterwards is the story of the birth of Jacob and Esau, brothers but different.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even from the moment they are born, competition for the birthright begins. \u00a0Esau emerges first, and he is the official first born, but Jacob follows, holding onto Esau\u2019s heel, which is testimony to his attempt, even in utero, to alter the birth order.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The children grow up. \u00a0Esau is his Daddy\u2019s boy and Jacob is Mommy\u2019s boy, which is important to remember for what takes places later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jacob never comes to terms with the birth order, and exploiting a moment of Esau\u2019s weakness, he buys the birthright from Esau for a pot of lentil soup (verses 29-34).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Points to Ponder:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A moment of kindness&#8211;Isaac and Ishmael (who have not seen each other since Ishmael was banished in Chapter 21) together bury their father Abraham (verse 9).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rebecca is barren just like Sarah (and just like other women in the Book of Genesis and in other books who give birth to significant figures), but only for a few verses. \u00a0Isaac, in contrast to Abraham, prays, and he is successful (verse 21).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verse 22: \u00a0\u201cBut the children struggled in her womb, and she said, \u201cIf so, why do I exist?\u201dShe went to inquire of the LORD.\u201d \u00a0What is it that disturbs Rebecca\u2019s pregnancy so greatly? Remember, this is her first pregnancy! Take a look at some of the midrashim written on this subject.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The names in this chapter and the stories that give them significance: \u00a0Esau (verse 25), Jacob (verse 26), and Edom (which is also a name for Esau or, in fact, the nation that emerges from him; see verse 30).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As great as Jacob\u2019s attempt to obtain the birthright, it is matched by Esau apathy towards it. \u00a0The moment after the dubious incident is described this way: \u201cJacob then gave Esau bread and lentil stew; he ate and drank, and he rose and went away. <\/span><em>Thus did Esau spurn the birthright<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u201d<\/em> (verse 34). \u00a0(Spoiler alert: In Chapter 27, when something similar happens, we will see a different reaction).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","image":{"ID":86314,"id":86314,"title":"Points to
