For I have been guided on my errand by the LORD, to the house of my master\u2019s kinsmen.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">24:49 &#8211; \u00a0And now, if you mean to treat my master with <\/span><em>chesed ve\u2019emet, \u00a0true kindness<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, tell me; and if not, tell me also, that I may turn right or left.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u05d7\u05e1\u05d3 <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chesed<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is one of the sweetest Hebrew words. A person filled with <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chesed<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a complete <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mentsch<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a kind, compassionate human being. But it\u2019s one of those words that are very culturally laden and difficult to translate; as we can see from just the translations of its use in three different contexts in this chapter alone, it doesn\u2019t map onto just one English language value concept. It is rendered variously as \u00a0grace (as in \u201cgracious\u201d not \u201cgraceful\u201d), faithfulness, kindness, also often lovingkindness, charity, favor, goodness, benevolence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also a central attribute of God&#8217;s actions, mentioned twice in the list of 13 in Ex. 34:6-7. There God is described as <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rav chesed ve-emet<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, &#8220;possessor of great loving kindness and truth&#8221; (or &#8220;true loving kindness&#8221;), and also:<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">notzer chesed la-alafim<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;safeguards grace for thousands&#8221; of generations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This root also appears in the well-known\u00a0<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chasid<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the pietist member of the ultra-Orthodox movement, originating in the 18<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century, known as <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chasidut<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>,<\/em> Chassidism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It often appears in constructions, such as: <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gemilut chasadim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>,<\/em> which refers to charitable behavior not done with money, but actual acts showing kindness to others.
