style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and helped him throughout the years<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">my stomach plummets at my lone task.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I never knew when I tended to the tents and flocks<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as we crossed the land of Canaan<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that I would be the one to find his son a wife.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On reaching the town of Nahor,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no sooner do the words of my prayers<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leave my lips, a young girl approaches,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bleating sheep at her heels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her skin is as smooth as Damascus silk,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and in her eyes a deep, ancient wisdom.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Graceful as a young gazelle, she runs<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to tell her family to prepare a place for me to stay.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In their tent, I lean on soft, crimson cushions,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drink brewed herbs from an embossed bronze cup<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and in the shafts of sunlight<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I study my hosts\u2019 faces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The father, Bethuel, gray peppering his hair,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">his eyes focused on my gifts,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fondles a speckled kid\u2019s ears<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as it lies at his feet, nibbling straw;<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">her brother, Laban, narrow-eyed,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sprawls across a mattress<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on a sheepskin rug that covers the earth floor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How I managed, I do not know,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but gently persuade the family<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to permit Rebecca to come with me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On our journey home, we approach a field<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and see my master\u2019s son deep in prayer;<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rebecca falls off her camel, pulls her veil across her face.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isaac brings Rebecca to his mother\u2019s tent,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which, like a clay pitcher,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:
