This chapter tells how a bride was chosen for Isaac. \u00a0What type of woman is fitting to be the bride. This chapter gives two very different answers.<\/span><\/p>\n

The first is at the beginning of the story. \u00a0Abraham makes his servant swear to find a bride for Isaac. \u00a0Who is the right woman? Just not a woman from among the Canaanites. Thus, the servant is sent to Haran to Abraham\u2019s close but distant relatives in order to find a wife there.<\/span><\/p>\n

Who is the fitting woman? \u00a0The second answer is given by the servant who arrives in Haran to the well and asks himself: \u00a0Now what? He does not look for Abraham\u2019s family but rather prays. In his prayer he asks God to help him with the next test: \u00a0\u201cLet the maiden to whom I say, \u2018Please, lower your jar that I may drink,\u2019 and who replies, \u2018Drink, and I will also water your camels\u2019\u2014let her be the one whom You have decreed for Your servant Isaac.\u201d (verse 14).<\/span><\/p>\n

Interesting. The test assesses one\u2019s kindness towards the stranger. \u00a0It is a type of kindness that is above and beyond. <\/span><\/p>\n

And Rebecca, the young woman who surprisingly turns out to be the daughter in Abraham\u2019s extended family, fits exactly what is sought. \u00a0She is a fitting bride.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is left? Gifts, meeting the family, their assent, and they are on the road.<\/span><\/p>\n

The emotional meeting between Isaac and Rebecca takes place in the field, and in verses 62-67. \u00a0Don\u2019t miss it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Points to Ponder:<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. \u00a0<\/span> See if you can find the differences: \u00a0The servant tells Rebecca\u2019s family what happened near the well (verses 42-48), but he makes slight changes not accidently.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. \u00a0<\/span> The servant request permission of the elders (Rebecca\u2019s brother and mother), but they give the young lady the last word: \u00a0\u201cLet us call the girl and ask for her reply\u201d (verse 57).<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. \u00a0<\/span> Rebecca\u2019s family\u2019s beautiful blessing is: \u201cO sister! May you grow Into thousands of myriads; May your offspring seize The gates of their foes\u201d (verse 60).<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. \u00a0 \u00a0For the first time in twenty generations since the creation of Adam, we read of the love of a man for a woman (verse
