Abraham sends his servant to bring a bride to Isaac after Sarah&#8217;s death. &#8220;How do you choose a bride?&#8221; What do we look for in a relationship? What we will say about Isaac, who was not involved in the process of choosing the bride?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is interesting to think about the negotiation processes &#8211; how Abraham\u2019s servant comes and puts everything on the table in the same way wealthy people conduct negotiations: I am the emissary of a wealthy man. \u00a0If you would like this wealth, take it. They do not want it; they do not need it. He knows how to talk to this family, the family of Laban and Rebecca. He convinces them that everything is in the hands of Heaven: what I prayed for just happened! It is a sign from God! (He understands that this is a family that uses good luck charms and signs from God). And Rebecca &#8230; where to begin? The girl who knows how to read the situation, knows that a wealthy man stands before her, and knows that it is a good idea to be kind to him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But I do not want to talk about all this. I want to talk about two other things.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first, the amazing moment, in which after the transaction has been completed, the family representatives say this amazing sentence: &#8220;Let us call the girl and ask for her reply&#8221; (24:57).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What? Since when does the bride herself have a say in the matter? Maybe it is a special arrangement for Rebecca? \u00a0Midrash Genesis Rabbah (60:12) states: \u201cFrom here we learn that one does not marry off an orphan woman until we ask her.\u201d \u00a0Rashi quotes this midrash and expands it saying: \u201cFrom here we learn that one does not marry off any woman without her consent\u201d (Rashi on Genesis 24:57).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why does Rashi amend the midrash? On the interpretive level, according to the midrash Rebecca was an orphan, but the principle applies to every woman. \u00a0On a substantive level, it is amazing, contrary to everything we thought, and acquires even more significance since we know that that Rashi had only daughters &#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second thing to note is the gap between Rebecca and Isaac. What kind of match is this? She is assertive and dominant. He is innocent, walks in the field, prays, still in a post-trauma state from the Akedah, and from his mother Sarah\u2019s death. \u00a0He brings Rebecca to his tent, loves her quietly, and only there is consoled over his mother&#8217;s death. Is this a match that can work?
