Then Abraham rose from beside his dead, and spoke to the Hittites, saying, \u201cI am a resident alien among you; sell me a burial site among you, that I may remove my dead for burial” <\/em>(23: 3-4).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u05d2\u05e8<\/span> Ger<\/span><\/em>, originally meant alien, or stranger\u2013 as in “stranger in a strange land” (Exodus 2:22). That is certainly what Abraham is referring to above: “I’m not from here. Be nice.”\u00a0Ger<\/em> is connected to the verb\u00a0gar,<\/em> “dwell, living temporarily in a place.”<\/span><\/p>\n

But he adds that he is a <\/span>toshav<\/span><\/em>, a resident, not just randomly passing through \u2013 thus the need for the grave site.<\/span><\/p>\n

In later Biblical law, it seems that the term <\/span>ger<\/span><\/em> referred to individuals who had some sort of residency, some ties to the community. Not full members of the Israelite community, but fellow travelers, as it were, who along with other disenfranchised populations, such as widows and orphans, required protection. There shall be one law for the \u05d2\u05e8 <\/span>ger<\/span><\/em> and for the citizen (Lev. 19:34, Num. 15:15-16) \u2013 and even show love to them: “you shall love the <\/span>ger<\/span><\/em>” (Deut. 10:19).<\/span><\/p>\n

From this developed the term <\/span>ger tzedek<\/span><\/em>, “a righteous <\/span>ger<\/span><\/em>” <\/span><\/i>meaning a convert. And finally just the word <\/span>ger<\/span><\/em> came to denote a convert, with the associated terms: <\/span>giyur<\/span><\/em>, “conversion,” <\/span>legayer<\/span><\/em>, “to convert (another),” and <\/span>lehitgayer<\/span><\/em>, “to become a convert.”<\/span><\/p>\n
