Sarah dies. And after one verse of crying and eulogizing, we are presented \u00a0with no less than 17 verses that deal with the commercial transaction associated with purchasing a gravesite, the place known to us today as \u201cMa\u2019arat Hamachpela.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

This cave, which as the Book of Genesis continues, is where our other patriarchs and matriarchs will be buried (to be precise: \u00a0Sarah and Abraham, Isaac and Rebecca, Jacob and Leah) is located in the edge of the field of Ephron, a man of Hittite origins, who lives with his countrymen in the area near Hebron.<\/span><\/p>\n

Abraham does not want to bury Sarah in the grave that the Hittites selected for him. He also does not want to acquire Ma\u2019arat Hamachpela as a gift. \u00a0Abraham wants to purchase it for full price, and in that way to establish his ownership over the land. And so it was – 400 talents of silver. Full price. No discount. \u201cThus the field with its cave passed from the Hittites to Abraham, as a burial site.\u201d (Genesis 23:20).<\/span><\/p>\n

Points to Ponder:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. \u00a0<\/span> The Hittites call Abraham \u201cyou are the elect of God among us\u201d (verse 6). An honor? Is it a recognition that Abraham is a representative of God and faith in that God?<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. \u00a0<\/span> One does not count silver shekels; one weighs silver (verse 16).<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. \u00a0<\/span> Why pay full price for something that one could get for free? What type of negotiations is it that the seller wants to give something for free and the buyer demands to pay? Why does Abraham agree to pay this huge sum of money that Ephron proposed without Abraham bargaining at all? It is worthy of some thought.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","image":{"ID":86314,"id":86314,"title":"Points to
