Genesis 23 tells us how Abraham purchased a field and a cave in Hebron to serve as Sarah\u2019s final resting-place. \u00a0Uncharacteristically, the Torah dwells on every slight detail of the sale, including verbatim transcripts of Abraham\u2019s conversations with the local population (the Hittites) and the owner of the field (Ephron).<\/span><\/p>\n

Malbim, the 19<\/span>th<\/span> century Biblical commentator, asked: \u201cOf what halakhic or other traditional significance is this entire story?\u201d The medieval exegete Ibn Ezra, too, recognized that the Torah\u2019s attention here to even minute detail (v. 17, for instance, even takes note of the trees in the field) reflects an extraordinary significance, and explained, as though in answer to Malbim\u2019s question, that: \u201cThis episode was reported to inform us of the superiority of <\/span>Eretz Yisrael<\/span><\/em> (the Land of Israel) above all other countries.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Indeed, Abraham\u2019s acquisition of the double-cave in Hebron as a hereditary burial vault (<\/span>ahuzat kever<\/span><\/em>) is regarded by the Midrash (Genesis Rabbah 79:7) as \u201cone of three places in which the nations of the world cannot accuse Israel of theft.\u201d The others being: Joseph\u2019s burial plot in Shechem, purchased by Jacob, and the site in Jerusalem on which the Temple was built, purchased by King David.<\/span><\/p>\n","image":{"ID":71378,"id":71378,"title":"jer32-deed of
