Gen 22:1 – \u201cSome time afterward, God, <\/span>nisa et<\/span><\/em>, put Abraham to the test. He said to him, \u2018Abraham,\u2019 and he answered, \u2018Here I am.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the amazing things that has happened to Hebrew in its \u201crevival\u201d from a religious tongue of study and prayer, to a spoken language of lived life, is the phenomenon of secularization. In the move from holy to daily, many terms which only had a theological or cultic meaning have been pressed into use in a wide variety of non-religious fields and contexts. This project 929 is based on reading a chapter – a <\/span>perek<\/span><\/em> \u00a0<\/em>– a day. Of course even secular Israelis understand that use of the word, but an even more common use of the word <\/span>perek<\/span><\/em> is to mean \u201cepisode,\u201d of your favorite TV series – called a <\/span>sidra<\/span><\/em> of course, which few identify with the old meaning, as the weekly Torah portion. <\/span><\/p>\n

Nisa<\/span><\/em> is a word like that. In the few dozen times it appears in the Tanakh (and this chapter is the first and best-known example) it means a test of a person\u2019s belief, a trial of their character or challenge to their moral fiber. To pass the test is to be deemed worthy.<\/span><\/p>\n

This word has morphed into several modern uses. The verb used here to describe God\u2019s trial of Abraham (the midrash identifies 10 different <\/span>nisyonot<\/span><\/em> tests of faith that he had to endure) – is now used simply to mean \u201cto try\u201d anything: try this toothpaste, try that car, did you try reading the instructions?<\/span><\/p>\n

And there are two main noun forms that come from this root. A <\/span>nisui<\/span><\/em> now means an experiment, of the scientific \u00a0sort, and <\/span>nisayon<\/span><\/em> refers to experience (as in work experience in a field) or an attempt. It seems they just don\u2019t make <\/span>nisyonot<\/span><\/em> like they used to.
