The story of the Akedah (\u201cthe Binding of Isaac\u201d) is the climactic point in the narratives about Abraham. \u00a0It is a climactic point whose power is expressed in its brevity. There are few dialogues, no emotions, many actions, and between what there is and what is missing, there is great suspense.<\/span><\/p>\n

The story begins with a vision of partnership between itself and the readers: \u00a0\u201cGod put Abraham to the test\u201d (22:1). As readers, we know what Abraham does not know: \u00a0What we are about to read in the following verses is the test. Abraham knows this only at the end, when everything is over and God in verse 12 confirms \u201cFor now I know that you fear God\u201d (22:12).<\/span><\/p>\n

Until then, Abraham hears the Divine command \u201cTake your son, your favored one, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the heights that I will point out to you\u201d (Genesis 22:2). \u00a0He hears and acts in complete silence until he does what he is supposed to do. He gets up early in the morning, mounts his donkey, takes two youths and Isaac his son, splits the wood for the burnt offering, and goes. In silence, over the course of three days, he goes to the place he was told.<\/span><\/p>\n

The difficult conversation takes place specifically between Abraham (who does not know that this is a test) and Isaac (who does not completely know that he is about to become a sacrifice): \u201cHere are the firestone and the wood; but where is the sheep for the burnt offering\u201d (verse 7).<\/span><\/p>\n

At the moment of truth, when the knife is heading towards Isaac, the angel intervenes \u201cDo not raise your hand against the boy\u201d (verse 12), and the ram that is caught innocently in the thicket is offered as a sacrifice instead of Isaac.<\/span><\/p>\n

Points to Ponder:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. \u00a0<\/span> In the first verse \u201cSome time afterward\u201d connects the story of the expulsion of Ishmael to the story of the Binding of Isaac. This connection manifests itself also in the details of the stories. \u00a0Both in order to bind and to expel, Abraham awakes early in the morning. Abraham almost loses both Ishmael and Isaac in these two stories. It is not for naught that someone once called Chapter 21 \u201cThe Binding of Ishmael.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. \u00a0<\/span> \u201cGo forth\u201d in verse 2 alludes to the first \u201cGo forth\u201d that was spoken about Abraham (Genesis 12:1). \u00a0In the first \u201cGo forth\u201d Abraham is asked to leave behind his past, and in our chapter he is asked to sacrifice his future.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. \u00a0<\/span> To God\u2019s address (verse 1), Abraham responds \u201cHere I am.\u201d \u00a0In the same way, he responds to Isaac (in verse 7) \u201cYes, my son.\u201d This encapsulates the tension between dedication to one\u2019s God and dedication to one\u2019s child.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. \u00a0<\/span> The name of Mt. Moriah, the place where the Binding of Isaac took place and the place where the Temple will be built, derives from this story (verse 14).<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. \u00a0<\/span> There is a surprise at the end of the chapter (verses 20-24). How is this related? Perhaps you have some thoughts.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
