When I read some passage in the Torah, I am interested in the small details, too, because sometimes the little details have a big message.<\/span><\/p>\n

I have read the story of the \u201cBinding of Isaac\u201d countless times. Two sets of phenomena always attracted my attention. One phenomenon is rooted in something that appears in the story seemingly too many times. The second phenomenon something in what appears in the story seemingly too few times. \u00a0Both phenomena express the same big idea.<\/span><\/p>\n

The word “son” appears several times in various forms, such as “Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and put it on his son Isaac\u201d (Genesis 22:6), \u201cYes, my son\u201d (22:7), \u201cHe bound his son Isaac\u201d (22:9). \u00a0Why does the text need to state the obvious, i.e. that Isaac is Abraham\u2019s son?<\/span><\/p>\n

The second phenomenon is expressed in the descriptions of Isaac. The command given to Abraham to perform the binding\/sacrifice of his son describes Isaac using three adjectives: “Your son … your favored one, Isaac, whom you love” (22:2). The words of the angel who speaks to Abraham after the Akedah describe Isaac twice with two adjectives: “Your son, your favored one” (22:12). The descriptor “whom you love” has disappeared!<\/span><\/p>\n

The significance of this incongruity is this: Abraham goes to bind\/sacrifice his son, and his heart is filled with the abundant natural love of a father towards a son. Therefore the words “his son” and “my son” appear again and again. But when he reaches for the knife to slaughter his son, it is not his son whom he slaughters, but it is the love of his son that he slaughters. It is out of the question to speak of him as if the love of Isaac was in his heart as it was.<\/span><\/p>\n

Abraham expressed the fear that was in his heart at the Akedah and began to do what he should not have done. Jewish law does not require one to love of God at the expense of loving sons and daughters. Jewish law is interested in both.<\/span><\/p>\n
