The midrash brings us a debate between God and his angels at the moments when Ishmael is about to die from thirst. The angels argue against saving Ishmael, due to the evil his descendants will perform, specifically against Israel. The answer that the rabbis put in God’s mouth, by expounding the words in the verse ‘for God has heeded the cry of the boy \u201c<\/span>where he is<\/span>, <\/span>ba’asher hu sham<\/span><\/em>\u201d<\/em> (21:17); is that a person is judged according to his present state and deeds.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why does the idea of comparison between the present and the future outcome come up here? Wouldn’t it have been more natural for the angels, if they wanted to play prosecutor, to mention Ishmael’s past deeds that aggravated Sarah?<\/span><\/p>\n

The rabbis often based midrashic interpretations on intertextual associations. The phrase <\/span>ba’asher hu sham<\/span><\/em> does not appear elsewhere in scripture, but if we break it up into two \u2013 <\/span>ba’asher hu<\/em> <\/span>and <\/span>hu sham<\/span><\/em> \u2013 we get two rare phrases, and intriguingly both appear in<\/span> only <\/span>one<\/span><\/em> other book in the Bible \u2013 Kohelet\/Ecclesiastes (3:9; 7:2; 1:5).<\/span><\/p>\n

One central theme in Kohelet is his questioning the object of one’s toil in this world \u2013 e..g: ‘What value, then, can the man of affairs get from what he (<\/span>ba’asher hu<\/span><\/em>) <\/span><\/i>earns’? (3:9). Kohelet is just being pessimistic, but this can be phrased positively: valuing the present, living for the day. The present is worth living in its full intensity, not only as a means for achieving the future, just as the life Ishmael can live has a value that exists independently of his
