19:5 – And they shouted to Lot and said to him, \u201cWhere are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us, \u05d5\u05e0\u05d3\u05e2\u05d4, <\/span>vened\u2019ah<\/em> <\/span>that we may be intimate, with them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

For me it was Woody Allen who popularized the phrase \u201cto know someone in the Biblical sense,\u201d meaning to have sex with them. There is knowledge, and then there is knowledge. Perhaps this use of the term shouldn\u2019t be surprising, given other uses of the same root. <\/span><\/p>\n

The first appearance of the root \u05d9-\u05d3-\u05e2, <\/span>y-d-\u2019ayin<\/span><\/em>, \u201cknow, knowledge,\u201d is of course with the <\/span>eytz hada\u2019at tov va-ra\u2019<\/span><\/em>, <\/span><\/i>\u00a0\u201cthe Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.\u201d While this seems to refer generally to morality, the first thing that Adam and Eve do after eating from this tree, is clothe themselves, having becoming aware of their nakedness. So there seem to be a connection, between this sort of <\/span>da\u2019at<\/em> <\/span>and specifically sexual mores. Soon after Adam knows Eve his wife, and she conceives. <\/span><\/p>\n

After that, there many types of knowing: people can strive to know God, and God\u2019s ways, as in Proverbs 3:6 – \u05d1\u05db\u05dc \u05d3\u05e8\u05db\u05d9\u05da \u05d3\u05e2\u05d4\u05d5 – <\/span>bechol derachecha da\u2019ehu<\/span><\/em>, <\/span><\/i>\u201cin all your ways, know Him\u201d. Or even just \u05d0\u05d7\u05d3 \u05de\u05d9 \u05d9\u05d5\u05d3\u05e2?, <\/span>echad mi yode\u2019a<\/span><\/em>? <\/span><\/i>Who knows One? – the Passover ditty. And God \u201cknows,\u201d or singles out people, as God refers to Abraham in the previous chapter (Gen 18:19). When <\/span>da\u2019at<\/em> <\/span>is combined with <\/span>chokhmah<\/span><\/em> and <\/span>tevunah<\/em> <\/span>(or <\/span>binah<\/span><\/em>)<\/span><\/i>, wisdom and discernment, as it is in Exodus 31 and 35, it becomes a particular sort of divine gift, that will give its name to one school of Hasidism, Chabad – the acronym of <\/span>chokhman, binah<\/em> <\/span>and <\/span>da\u2019at<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

In contemporary Hebrew words formed from this root include \u05de\u05d3\u05e2, <\/span>mada<\/span><\/em>\u2019<\/span><\/i>, \u201cscience,\u201d \u05de\u05d9\u05d3\u05e2, <\/span>meida<\/span><\/em>\u2019<\/span><\/i>, \u201cinformation,\u201d \u05de\u05d5\u05d3\u05d9\u05e2\u05d9\u05df, <\/span>modi\u2019in<\/span><\/em>, \u201cinformation desk,\u201d (as well as military intelligence), \u05d3\u05e2\u05d4, <\/span>de\u2019ah<\/span><\/em>, \u201copinion,\u201d \u05d4\u05d5\u05d3\u05e2\u05d4, <\/span>hoda\u2019ah<\/span><\/em>, \u201cannouncement,\u201d \u05de\u05d5\u05d3\u05e2\u05d4, <\/span>moda\u2019ah<\/span><\/em>, \u201cadvertisement,\u201d \u05de\u05d5\u05d3\u05e2\u05d5\u05ea, <\/span>muda\u2019ut<\/span><\/em>, \u201cawareness,\u201d \u05ea\u05d5\u05d3\u05e2\u05d4, <\/span>toda\u2019ah<\/span><\/em>, \u201cconsciousness,\u201d and \u05d9\u05d3\u05d9\u05e2\u05d4, <\/span>yedia\u2019h<\/span><\/em>, <\/span><\/i>meaning \u201cknowledge of\u201d or “notice” – as in the name of the newspaper <\/span>Yedi\u2019ot Acharonot<\/span><\/em> (late breaking news – it used to be an afternoon paper) and \u05d9\u05d3\u05d9\u05e2\u05ea \u05d4\u05d0\u05e8\u05e5, <\/span>yedi\u2019at ha-aretz<\/span><\/em>, the school subject of \u201cknowledge of the land,\u201d which closes the circle here, since that name was chosen for the unique Israeli combination of geography, botany-zoology, history, and folklore, about the Land of Israel precisely to call to mind the Biblical connotations of an almost sexual intimacy, and conquest.<\/span><\/p>\n

And let\u2019s not forget the innocent question word: \u05de\u05d3\u05d5\u05e2? <\/span>Madu\u2019a<\/span><\/em>? <\/span><\/i>Why? Wherefore?
