{"id":37145,"date":"2018-08-07T21:48:57","date_gmt":"2018-08-07T18:48:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/?p=37145"},"modified":"2022-03-01T09:52:51","modified_gmt":"2022-03-01T07:52:51","slug":"chapter-summary-genesis-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/en\/chapter-summary-genesis-19\/","title":{"rendered":"Chapter Summary &#8211; Genesis 19"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-content\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[281],"tags":[],"acf":{"old_id":"37145","type":"no","iframe":"","writer":false,"related_cahpter":"19","type_929":"2","show_author_image":false,"old_url":"","post_main_content":{"description":"Chapter 19: When it\u2019s bad, it\u2019s bad!\r\n\r\n","content":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The previous chapter ended with the understanding that there are not enough righteous people in Sodom to save the entire city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this chapter, we encounter the evil of the city, its destruction, and the rescue of the &#8220;one righteous man in Sodom,&#8221; Abraham&#8217;s nephew Lot, and his family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The angels who come to save Lot receive hospitality in Lot&#8217;s house, which alludes back to Abraham\u2019s hospitality towards them (in the previous chapter). As prominent as Lot\u2019s righteousness is, the wickedness of the people of Sodom is even more dominant: &#8220;Young and old, all the people, to the last man\u201d (verse 4) gather around Lot&#8217;s house and demand to be handed over the guests in order to carry out what we call today an \u201cact of sodomy.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After readers are convinced of the justness of the imminent destruction of Sodom, all that is left to do is for the angels to convince Lot and his family that they must leave the city. It is not easy to leave (verses 14-16), and perhaps it is the difficulty of parting that causes Lot&#8217;s wife, while trying to fulfill the order, to look back and become a pillar of salt (verse 26).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After fleeing the destruction, Lot and his daughters settle in a cave. Lot\u2019s daughters, who believe that they are the only people left in the world, serve their father wine and take advantage of his drunkenness to sleep with him and establish the next generation (verses 30-38). From this problematic union were born the historical ancestors of two nations, Ammon and Moab, nations that in the future will have \u00a0a complex relationship with Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Points to ponder:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lot is, as noted, the \u201cone righteous man in Sodom,\u201d but apparently righteousness is all relative. See his problematic suggestion to the people of Sodom (verses 7-8) where he says:\u00a0 &#8216;Take my daughters but do not harm my guests.&#8217;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">God had promised not to bring a flood, that is, not to destroy all of humanity for its sin. The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah shows that the commitment is to forgo total destruction. Destruction on a more local level of a sinful city is not included in this promise.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sodom and Gomorrah are etched into biblical consciousness as symbols of moral depravity and as symbols of total destruction (see Isaiah Chapter 1, for example), and this is how Sodom and Gomorrah are remembered to his very day.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The salinity of the Dead Sea, the sulfur, the desolation. According to the biblical story, this unique geography begins here.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>\u00a0The pillar of the salt of Lot&#8217;s wife (verse 26) is a mystery that has intrigued commentators, artists, and travelers throughout the generations who have identified it it with various salt columns on the way to Sodom.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","image":{"ID":86314,"id":86314,"title":"Points to
