Ishmael was the son of Abraham and Sarah\u2019s handmaid Hagar, by whom Sarah proposed that Abraham have a child. Sarah eventually had a child of her own, Isaac. One day Sarah witnessed Ishmael \u201cmocking\u201d her only son. Whatever Ishmael was doing, it was enough to convince Sarah that he was not fit company for Isaac. Hagar and the young Ishmael were sent out into the desert in the blazing sun. Their water ran out, and Hagar put the child under a bush, saying \u201cI cannot watch the boy die.\u201d God hears Hagar\u2019s cry and reassures her that God will save her son. \u201c…I will make him into a great nation\u2019. Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water. So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

The midrash adds the following commentary: \u201cRabbi Simon said, The ministering angels immediately began accusing him , saying, \u201cLord of the universe, will you bring up a well for an individual who will one day slay your children with thirst?\u201d G-d said to them, \u201cAt this moment, what is he ?\u201d \u201cRighteous,\u201d they replied. \u201cI judge man only as he is at the moment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Punishment as deterrence against future crimes is not divine justice. God does not judge people for what they might become. He judges them as they are now.<\/span><\/p>\n
