But in these words there is no explanation as to why the Israelites must remain slaves in Egypt for so long, as it is written &#8220;your offspring shall be strangers in a land not their own, and they shall be enslaved and oppressed four hundred years&#8221; (Genesis 15:13).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here is the solution behind this perplexing statement, namely, the reason for the Israelite oppression, is found in our chapter. \u00a0A barren Sarai seeks to solve her inability to conceive a child for Abram by giving him her maid servant Hagar. The text states: \u201cSarai, Abram\u2019s wife, had borne him no children. She had an Egyptian maidservant whose name was Hagar\u201d (Genesis 16:1) \u00a0Hagar\u2019s \u201cEgyptian-ness\u201d is stated again in verse 3 \u201cSo Sarai, Abram\u2019s wife, took her maid servant , Hagar the Egyptian.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After Hagar gets pregnant, she sees herself as a superior to her barren mistress. In response, Sarai begins to torment her with Abram\u2019s permission: &#8220;\u201cYour maid is in your hands. Deal with her as you think right.\u201d Then Sarai treated her harshly (literally, \u2018oppressed her\u2019), and she fled from her&#8221; (Genesis 16:6). The tormenting of Hagar in the house of Sarai will re-appear and be mentioned in the words of the angel to Hagar in Genesis 16:9: \u00a0\u201cGo back to your mistress, and submit to her harsh treatment (literally, \u2018submit to the oppression\u2019). The oppression of Hagar will be alluded to one more time in the explanation in Genesis 16:11 of the name that is given to her son that she bears: \u201cYou shall call him Ishmael, For the Lord has paid heed to your suffering (literally, \u2018oppression\u2019).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fate of the Hagar the Egyptian in the house of Sarai is thus similar to the fate of the Israelites in Egyptian. \u00a0Note the words of God to Moses from the burning bush: &#8220;I have marked well the plight (literally, \u2018the oppression\u2019) of My people in Egypt and have heeded their outcry&#8230;&#8221; (Exodus 3: 7).
