When the aggadic literature of our Sages deals with the story of Genesis 16, it focuses on a number of questions: the origins of Hagar the Egyptian, the nature of her relationship with Sarah, and her encounter with the angels who bring the news of Ishmael\u2019s birth. \u00a0Here, I will briefly address one of these matters: The origins of Hagar who is described as \u201can Egyptian maid servant.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A fifth century CE midrash (Genesis Rabbah 45:1) connects our chapter to the story of Abram and Sarai in Egypt (Genesis Chapter 12), and concludes in the name of the tanna (a rabbi from the first two centuries CE) Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai that \u201cHagar was the daughter of Pharaoh. \u00a0When Pharaoh saw the miracles that had been performed for Sarah in his palace (Genesis Chapter 12:10-20), he took his daughter and gave her to Sarah as a gift. He said, “It is better for my daughter to be a maid servant in Sarah\u2019s house than to be a noblewoman in the palace in Egypt.” Connecting Hagar to a royal dynasty raises her worth and status as fitting match for the father of the Israelite nation.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a later midrash, which emerged in the days when the Jewish people \u00a0had contact with the Moslem world, which saw Ishmael as the father of Islam – an attempt was made to reduce Hagar’s status, probably as a polemic against the new conqueror of the Land of Israel. This midrash states that \u201cwhen Pharaoh took Sarah as a wife, he included in her marriage contract Hagar who was born to Pharaoh from one of his concubines\u201d (Pirkei D\u2019Rabbi Eliezer 26). \u00a0In other words, this second midrash makes a slight change; it adds one word, \u201chis concubines,\u201d which is an example of a tiny change that was made in the portrayal of Ishmael and his mother Hagar once they became knowns as representatives of Islam.<\/span><\/p>\n
