Adam and Eve eat from the tree and are exiled from Eden. Cain murders his brother and is exiled from the land. The builders of the tower of Babel want to make a name for themselves and are scattered all over the earth. In our chapter we hear that Abram’s descendants will be exiled to a foreign land.

The exile of Abram’s descendants, however, doesn’t follow the pattern.

The others are direct consequences of the protagonist’s sin. Adam, Eve, Cain, and the builders of the tower are exiled lest they attempt to sin again. How have the unborn children of Abram sinned? A close reading of the text implies that it is related to the treatment of Hagar. Abram’s progeny will be “strangers” (ger is the same root as Hagar), in a land that is not theirs, (Hagar is Egyptian, living in a land that is not hers) and they will be afflicted (‘inuy), just as Sarai afflicted (‘inuy) Hagar. But Abram and Sarai are not exiled due to their treatment of Hagar, their descendants are!

Furthermore, even if the exile of Abram’s descendants is related to the affliction of Hagar, those events have not yet occurred. We are in chapter 15, and the Hagar episode occurs in 16. It certainly appears that 15 predates chapter 16 since Abram is childless at the time of this prophecy. If a sin in the present leads to immediate consequences, can a future sin allow for consequences in the deep future?

A last difference is that God takes Abram outside. The others are exiled from God; distanced from the place where they accessed, communicated with, or challenged God. When Abram is told of the future exile, God doesn’t send Abram away; he takes Abram outside. His descendants will be exiled from the land, but not from God. When that exile truly begins, when a terrified elderly Jacob is leading his family down to Egypt, God appears to him in a nighttime vision and says “Don’t fear going down to Egypt, for I will make you a great nation. I myself will go down to Egypt, and I myself will bring you back.”

The vicissitudes of our people begin in today’s chapter. Much like in our chapter, the how and why are impossible to understand. The most we can hope for is for God’s continued promise to venture outside with us, and then always lead us back home.

image: The Vision of the Exile at the Covenant of the Parts by Dov Lederberg

Dov Lederberg -
